Practical Implementation of
In-House Electron Beam Sterilization

May 20, 2026

On 20 May 2026 the iia organized and hosted a webinar featuring Alex Folz from ATS Life Sciences Systems – Chicago.

Key messages in Alex’ presentation about in-house E-beam sterilization included:

  • A review of the classical sterilization modalities, including Processes, Benefits, and Use Cases
  • Limitations of classical sterilization modalities
  • The importance of analysis and dose mapping a product
  • An overview of an in-house sterilization system, including conveyor, shielding, layout and configuration

Ready to bring sterilization in-house?

You’ve seen how E-beam solves sterilization integration, speed, and sustainability challenges. Now let’s see if it works for your device. Our engineers will assess your product and tell you what’s possible.

What you can expect from your assessment:

  • Potential throughput and dose uniformity
  • Facility integration requirements
  • Regulatory considerations

Alex Folz
Applications Engineer II,
ATS Lfe Sciences Systems

Alex has spent his career honing his craft in Mechanical Engineering and automation. After completing a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from MSOE and an MEng in Mechanical Engineering from Marquette, Alex started as a Systems Design Engineer at ATS after graduation. Through 6 years in Systems Design, Alex spent plenty of time working on both custom machine quotes and integration. For the last 2 years, Alex has worked in Applications with a focus on machine quotes/concepts and front end of the business activity.

Thomas Kroc
United States Representative,
International Irradiation Association (iia)

Thomas retired in 2024 after 35 years at Fermilab. During that time, he combined education and experience in nuclear engineering, accelerator physics, and medical physics to become an expert in accelerator-based sources of radiation for industrial applications, particularly the sterilization of medical devices. Until his retirement, he lead Fermilab’s effort to develop a compact, superconducting accelerator capable of providing electron beams of hundreds of kilowatts to provide megacurie equivalent X-ray beams. He continues to lead an annual workshop on medical device sterilization through his position as Scientist Emeritus at Fermilab.
